Group courses will be run from the Eaglevale camp grounds on the Wonnangatta river, west of the township of Dargo. Right in the middle of Sambar deer territory, this location is ideal for training hunters on everything they need to know about hunting Sambar deer on public land.
The course will be limited to just 4 participants to keep it very personal and give everyone the opportunity to ask as many questions as they need. All course dates are over a weekend starting with a meet and greet on the Friday afternoon at 3pm. After everyone has been introduced we will start with a comprehensive review of what gear is required for hunting Sambar deer.
The course is conducted almost exclusively in the field, allowing you to see, touch and even smell the sign left by the deer. You will be shown old as well as fresh sign and what to do with this information. Whilst in the bush actively looking for deer you will be perfecting your stalking and glassing techniques along with learning how to determine the most effective hunting strategies for the terrain, time of day and weather conditions. There is a strong emphasis on finding areas worth hunting in our PUBLIC LAND and dealing with hunting pressure. The course is limited only by the students thirst for knowledge.
We will be actively looking for deer at first light on both Saturday and Sunday and at dusk on the Saturday evening. The course will conclude around lunchtime on the Sunday to allow people that have traveled a long distance to arrive home at a reasonable time. During the day we will be discussing several topics both in the field and back in camp. Although there will be a set curriculum for the weekend there will be plenty of time to have open chats about any questions participants might have.
Topics covered in great detail includes:
- The gear you need
- Rifles, ammunition
- Optics
- Navigation
- Finding areas to hunt
- How to hunt PUBLIC LAND
- Deer sign
- Weather and how it affects deer
- Hunting Tactics
- Shot placement
- After the shot
You will be required to bring your own camping equipment and food for the weekend.
You will also need a sturdy pair of hunting boots, a small backpack and water for the day either in bottles or in a water bladder.
Appropriate clothing for the conditions and a pair of binoculars are needed. If you don’t own binoculars or can’t borrow a pair make sure you make me aware of this and I’ll sort a pair out for you.
Transport can be provided but must be arranged prior to the weekend.
